Human hair extensions are stylish and convenient, but they need looking after to ensure they stay in prime condition and stand the test of time.  Good quality permanent extensions, such as the range from Hair Development, should last for up to 3 months with the right care.  Follow this simple guide from the extension experts about what you should and shouldn’t be doing to protect your new, gorgeous tresses and keep them in tip top condition for the full time period.

Do:

  • Tie your hair into a ponytail or loose plait for bed, to prevent knots and tangles
  • Brush hair at least three times a day to prevent tangling and excessive breakage
  • Tie hair up for exercise
  • Keep any products such as mousse, serum etc away from the bonds
  • Keep hair clean
  • Wash with a shampoo and conditioner especially created for extensions, and use an intense conditioning treatment once a week
  • Use a heat protecting spray before styling, especially if you straighten or curl the hair regularly
  • Comb wet hair before blow drying
  • Blow dry hair on a cool setting
  • Style as normal, avoiding the bonds and finishing with a serum

Don’t:

  • Expose the hair to water for extended periods of time
  • ‘Scrub’ the hair when washing or towel drying – use a smoothing motion and pat dry to keep the hair smooth and frizz-free
  • Go to sleep with wet hair
  • Use shampoos and conditioners with oils, as these can damage the bonds and lead to fall out
  • Apply conditioner to the bonds, but it is vital to condition the length of the hair
  • Apply heated hair tools (straighteners or curlers) to the bonds
  • Get hair colour on the bonds
  • Think less is more when it comes to product application.  Remember the extensions can’t absorb vital nutrients through the scalp like natural growing hair, so it is essential to make sure the hair is conditioned, nourished and protected.
